10 Types of Honey Worth Tasting

Life is Short- Eat Dessert First!

Are desserts and sweets your first choice whenever you think about good food? Does cheesecake seem irresistible every time you look at it? We think the answer is yes!

On a more serious note, letting emotions take the upper hand while choosing sweet foods is not a wise decision. The most common source of sweetness in desserts – sugar – does not enjoy the best of terms with nutritionists and food researchers. Moreover, excess consumption of sugar can cause serious health issues.

To satisfy your sweet tooth and keep health concerns at bay, you should go for the best alternative – different types of honey. Read on to know more.

Types of Honey-Based on Source

We can categorize honey based on the source of nectar used for production – as below:

  • Single-origin honey: The nectar for this type usually is sourced from a specific plant only – for example – clover plants.
  • Multi-flower or multi floral honey: The nectar is a mixture of different varieties. Sourced by bees from different plants and then processed into a final variant. An example of this type can be wildflower honey.
  • Local or location-specific honey: The nectar for this variety usually originates from a specific geographical location such as a mountain range or forest- for example – Himalayan wild honey.

Types of Honey-Based on Flavor

As a result of continuous research and development efforts, manufacturers have introduced different types of honey with various flavors. A few premium varieties of flavored honey are listed below:

  • Acacia honey: It has a light amber color that is picture-perfect! The extraordinary sweet taste is well complemented by floral accents. Acacia honey is considered fit for consumption by diabetics.
  • Avocado honey: It is produced from nectar sourced from avocado blossoms. With its dark amber hue and rich buttery taste, avocado honey is ideal for baked foods.
  • Blueberry honey: With origins in Michigan and New England, blueberry honey is extracted from white blueberry flowers. A pale amber hue and smooth and tangy tone imparted by the blueberry sets this variety apart. Blueberry Honey is usually served as an accompaniment with breakfast.
  • Himalayan wild honey: The nectar for this variety of honey is organically procured from the wild beehives of Himalayan forests in Northern India. The color is a dark shade of amber, while the taste is delightfully sweet with pronounced multi floral accents.
  • Orange-blossom honey: The flavor of this variety comes a combination of citric sources. It is usually light amber and has a mild fruity flavor and scent. The highlight of this variety is an aromatic citrus taste.
  • Sage honey: The color of this variety is light, but with a heavier consistency. The taste is a mild sweet one, which makes sage honey a good multi-purpose honey. Sage honey also crystallizes slowly, which means it has a longer shelf life.
  • Wildflower honey: This is a wild multi floral variety of honey, produced by bees when they cross-pollinate different kinds of flowers together. The visual quality and flavor of this variant displays a vast range that depends on the type of wildflowers involved.
