What are Scones?
Scones originated in Scotland and are now a mainstay in Britain as a breakfast item. There are sweet and savory versions of the bread – you can put in almost any ingredient and have a good meal. Eat it for breakfast or serve it for high tea with jam.
Essential Tips for Making Delicious Scones
Whichever recipe you decide to use for your scones, use these tips to get the best results.
Folding the dough: After making the dough, fold it like a letter and roll it out. This will ensure that the butter gets distributed evenly and give the scone its signature light texture.
Sugaring: Scones are not very sweet and if you want them to be, you can sprinkle regular sugar using egg whites or buttermilk. The latter will help the sugar to stick and make the scone taste good.
Cutting: Use a chef’s knife to cut the dough after it has been rolled out. Make squares and eliminate wasted dough.

Basic Scone Recipe
· 2 cups all-purpose flour – measure and level with a knife
· 120 g. Sugar
· 1 tbsp of baking soda
· ½ tsp salt
· 1 stick Unsalted butter – this has to be cold as it helps to make good scones
· ½ cup Heavy whipping cream
· 1 Egg
· ½ tsp Vanilla extract
Whisk flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder together. Cut your stick of butter into very small chunks. Next, add the whipping cream, vanilla extract and egg and whisk till everything is mixed well. Lightly flour a countertop and work the dough into a ball. Flatten it to make a 7-inch rectangle and cut into 8 pieces of equal size.
Line a baking pan with parchment paper and put the cut dough on it. Put the pan into the freezer for ca. 10 minutes so the dough is chilled. Take it out and brush the top of all the scones with a bit of whipping cream. Add some granulated sugar on the top and bake for 20 minutes at 400° F till they are light brown on the top.
You can add a sugar glaze on the top for additional sweetness. You can add dry fruits, apples, cinnamon, blueberries, and even mashed potatoes to the dough. This adds deliciousness and flavor to your breakfast or high tea.
