Dom Pérignon, the Brand of Vintage Champagne

Many occasions become even more memorable with special wines. Dom Pérignon has created a niche for itself globally as one of the ultimate drinks to enjoy in special occasion. Dom Pérignon is a brand of vintage Champagne produced by the Champagne house Moët & Chandon, and has a history that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, and a reputation for being a quality drink.

France is synonymous with the land where Champagnes are produced. The prevalent labelling law permits only sparkling wines using the traditional method in the country’s Champagne region to be referred to as Champagne.

The Grapes

The kind of grape blends used for preparing Dom Pérignon depends on winemakers blend Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to create the wines. There is no set formula for making this Champagne. However, Dom Pérignon’s winemakers rarely go beyond 60% of volume from either of these grapes. 

Dom Pérignon have graceful bubbles, while the dry Champagne comes with flavours of smoke, honey, and citrus. 

The History

The prestigious brand has an intriguing history. It got its name from a Benedictine monk who started blending different wines for improving its flavour. He also made enhancements to corks and wine bottles. Dom Pierre Pérignon (1638–1715) was a monk and cellar master at the Benedictine Abbey in Hautvillers.

Many people have a notion that Dom Pierre Pérignon discovered this Champagne, however, his improvements had a significant part in the developing of méthode champenoise, which took place 100 years after his death.

In the early 20th century, Englishmen Laurence Venn indicated producing a niche Champagne prepared from specific vintages. As a majority of Champagnes are prepared from blending the vintages, this vintage prestige Cuvee appeared to be a novel one. So, Moët & Chandon introduced the Dom Pérignon’s 1921 vintage. The brand initially shipped the first one hundred and fifty bottles to a company in the United States called Simon Bros & Co. People took a liking to this Champagne and it soon became one of their most desired drinks.
