What is Michelada?
Michelada is a highly flavored, refreshing and spicy Mexican beer cocktail drink. It is also referred as cerveza preparada because of the ingredient mix or Michelada preparacion mixed with the beer. The main ingredients are hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, lime juice and seasonings. This drink is popular not only in Mexico but also in other countries in Latin America like Colombia and Chile. Use a beer with rich flavor and strong carbonation to maintain an authentic taste. However, it all depends on your liking and you can increase or reduce the amount of an ingredient based on your taste and flavor preferences.
Ingredients:
- Freshly squeezed lime juice
- Chili lime salt or an equivalent spicy salt mix
- Maggi liquid seasoning
- Hot sauce
- Worcestershire sauce
- Beer
- Ice cubes
Use branded Mexican chili lime salt or prepare your own spicy salt. It is placed on the glass rim as well as to give the drink a spicy and salty flavor. Use a chilled and freshly squeezed lime to get its juice. You can find the liquid Maggi seasoning in the Latin product sections in the grocery stores. It gives the drink a strong umami and salty flavor. You can use soy sauce as a substitute for it. Use dark or light Mexican laser but most authentic drinks use cerveza oscura beer. There are many branded beers suitable for this purpose. Use one with noticeable caramel. Use a flavorful Vienna ledger if you want to mix your drink with the craft beer.
Preparation:
Cut and run the lime on the glass rim. Now turn the glass upside down and place its rim in the spicy salt mix placed in a plate. Now add lime juice, seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, a small amount of chili line salt and Tabasco. Mix these ingredients before filling the glass with the beer. Avoid touching the glass rim when mixing the ingredients or pouring the beer. Stir the drink and add the ice cubes. Now your Michelada drink is ready to serve.
