Pizza has a long history. Flatbreads with toppings were consumed by the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. The latter ate a version with herbs and oil, similar to what we know today as focaccia. However, the modern birthplace of pizza is southwestern Italy’s Campania region, home to the city of Naples.
Ingredients To Make Pizza Dough
(Recipe yields 2 servings of 12-inch pizzas)
- 440 g or 3 ½ cups of all-purpose flour
- 320 ml or 1 ⅓ cups of warm water
- 30 ml or 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 7 g or 2 ¼ teaspoons of instant yeast
- 13 g or 1 tablespoon of sugar
- ¾ teaspoon of salt
- Cornmeal to dust the pan
Preparation time: 2 hours, 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours, 30 minutes
Step By Step Directions
Step 1: Add the yeast, warm water, and sugar into a large bowl and whisk it. If you are using a stand mixer, then you can use the bowl of your stand mixer. Allow this mixture to rest for 5 minutes.
Step 2: Add salt, olive oil, and flour to the yeast mixture and combine it using a rubber spatula or a wooden spoon. If using a stand mixer, you can do this using the dough hook attachment.
Step 3: Lightly flour your surface and place the dough on it. Lightly flour your hands and knead the dough well for 5 minutes. The dough should feel soft and should slowly bounce back when poked.
Step 4: Grease a bowl with olive oil. You can use the same bowl that you had used for the dough. Place the kneaded dough in the bowl and roll it till it is fully coated in olive oil.
Step 5: Allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 60-90 minutes. You will see that it will double in size once it rises.
Step 6: Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit or 215 degrees Celsius.
Step 7: Lightly grease your pizza pan or baking paper. Sprinkle some cornmeal on it, so it can add to the crunch of the crust.
Step 8: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 2 portions.
Step 9: Shape the dough and prepare your toppings. Once you add the toppings, bake the pizza for 12-15 minutes. Slice and serve hot.
