What Makes Guatemala A Unique Coffee Producer?

Guatemala’s coffee is the ideal balance of sweet, strong, full-bodied with complex flavor notes and gentle acidity. The country’s coffee allures a large number of people for obvious reasons. 

Why Is Guatemalan Coffee So Good?

The place is magnet for many coffee planters for several reasons. Here, the coffee is grown at a height of more than 5,000 feet. Now you know why the coffee here has a distinctive and robust flavor. 

The country is a distinct growing region and has a mild subtropical climate. The volcanic soil here is rich in nutrients and thus creates a perfect setup for producing some of the finest coffee beans on the market. 

Coffee History Of Guatemala

It was in the mid-18th century when coffee arrived in Guatemala for the first time as ornamental plants. The coffee production, though, took off only in the 1860s when the natural dye industry of the country was overhauled by synthetic products. There was a need for a new industry to rescue the economy. 

Guatemala’s government inspired the popularity of coffee plantations. Soon, coffee emerged as the largest export of the country. Until 2011, the country featured in the list of top five largest coffee-producing nations until it was surpassed by Honduras

Unique Coffee Growing Conditions 

The country boasts of the most varied climate on the planet for producing coffee. Guatemala has seven prime coffee-growing areas. Among these, Atitlan, Huehuetenango, and Antigua are the most popular ones. Every region has its own microclimates and distinct growing conditions. 

In Antigua, coffee is cultivated on the volcano slopes, and it receives little rain and a lot of sunlight. The Huehuetenango region is situated close to the border of Mexico. It produces coffee on the highest altitudes and has coffee with fruity, complex flavors.
